Scan resolution

Postby johnn15 on Thu Feb 18, 2010 2:14 pm

Hi all

I have been using Grasp for a little while now. I am having some difficulties in using the scan data "downline" with polyworks. The resolution of the pointcloud seems quite low to be able to alligne scans together with ease.

I am not sure wich formatt is the best one to export the file in. I don't need the texture of scans as my hope is to end up with CAD models for machining

How can I increase the resolution of the point cloud scan, would a better camera just be for the texture or also improve the scan data ?
I am at about 500 by 700 resolution at 25 FPS, test scanning an ornament about 3" high.

Cheers John

Hi John,

Have merged scan data In geomagic and vrmesh. Point clouds were used. Merging requires that both data sets have sufficient overlap as well as sufficient uniqueness in terms of shape/detail.

Scan resolution is directly related to camera resolution. So with higher camera resolution you can expect higher scan resolution.
While this can be very effective it does not by itself necessarily mean better scans.

Some tips:

1. Scanning angle is very important. Wide angles result in better shape and detail capturing although occlusion prevails more.
2. Camera should not be too close to the object. The idea is to create an orthographic flat view of the scene. That is, you want to set the camera at distance that requires a bit of zoom to maximize the object in the scene without amplifying lens errors. Try to make as many scans of the object in different positions without changing the camera position or making lens adjustments.
3. Make sure that the scan line is sharp, thin and clear. Adjustments to brightness and contrast can make a big difference.
4. Sweep the laser in a consistent, slow fashion.
